NXP Semiconductors MC3377x Battery Junction Box Controller ICs

NXP Semiconductors MC3377x Battery Junction Box Controller ICs are designed to integrate sense, think, and act capabilities on a single device. These ICs redundantly measure currents, temperatures and voltages, and process the results to detect application fault events and trigger reactions without a microcontroller. The MC3377x ICs support an isolated daisy chain (TPL3) or a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) for communication with the microcontroller. The ICs also support Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL D) for the features.

The MC3377x ICs feature four current measurement channels, two independent controllers, including a driver stage, decision engine event manager, and an extensive set of diagnostics. These ICs come in a thermally enhanced LQFP64-EP package with 0.5mm pitch. The MC3377x ICs are AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified. These ICs are used in applications such as Battery Management System (BMS), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Energy Storage Systems (ESSs), and EV Supply Equipment (EVSE).

    • 4 current measurement inputs (supporting 2 ASIL D current measurements):
      • 1 precise ADC per input (27bit, 1kHz)
      • 1 fast ADC per input (16bit, 125kHz)
      • Supports Hall sensor measurement (5V range)
    • Shunt temperature drift compensation with external temperature sensor
    • 1 coulomb counter per channel
    • Overcurrent detection (threshold, di/dt calculation, melting fuse emulation)
    • Switchable architecture support (2 x 400V/800V) with real-time calculation of current between packs
  • General-purpose measurement:
    • 16 measurement inputs, supporting up to eight redundant measurements (16bit, 1kHz)
    • Overvoltage and undervoltage detection
    • Multiplexed with 2 x 8 GPIOs
  • Event manager:
    • Set of input events from other modules (overcurrent detection, fuse emulation, overvoltage detection, and digital input)
    • Configurable logical processing of the events (for example, debouncing, OR, custom logic functions)
    • Triggering reactions (pyrotechnic switch controller, MCU wake-up, and GPIOs)
  • Pyrotechnic Switch Controller (PSC):
    • 2 independent controllers, including the driver stage
    • AK-LV 16 (2012-07) compliant

    • Seemingly instantaneous triggering by the event manager without MCU processing
    • Extensive set of diagnostics (capacitor measurement, ESR measurement, and igniter measurement)
  • MCU interface supporting SPI or isolated daisy-chain protocol TPL3:
    • SPI (up to 4Mbit)
    • TPL3 (2Mbit, 62 nodes, transformer, or capacitive isolation)
  • Power management:
    • Direct supply from the pyrotechnic switch supply voltage
    • Redundant analog supplies
  • SPI controller interface and I2C controller interface to control peripherals
